Another Year of Ups and Downs
The year started out well for the Americans, with a victory at Princeton, New Jersey. During the summer, however, they were unable to stop a major British invasion from Canada, and things looked bleak. On top of that, the British won some major victories in Pennsylvania and occupied Philadelphia. But late in the year, the British forces that had invaded from Canada were forced to surrender, and it looked like France would be ready to openly support the Americans.
